Why Does My Phoenix Toilet Keep Clogging?

If your toilet keeps clogging, you probably want answers about what’s causing it and what you can do differently to avoid the problem in the future.

It may not be fun to hear, but the most common reason we see for toilet clogs is improper use, not actually a problem with the toilet itself. What do we mean? Too often people put things down toilets that they shouldn’t – “flushable” wipes, feminine products, dental floss, cotton balls, and all sorts of other things too bizarre to mention. Remember, the only thing that should be going down your toilet is toilet paper and the waste that it’s wiping. Even if something is marked as “flushable” it still doesn’t belong in your pipes if you want to keep them healthy. And just because it’s biodegradable, doesn’t mean it should go down your toilet either. If you have recurring clogs, start by looking into what’s being put down the toilet. If it’s your home bathroom, remind family members what should and shouldn’t get flushed and if it’s a business bathroom, post a notice about not flushing other types of materials.

Of course, flushing the wrong things can cause a toilet blockage, but clogs can also result from normal usage as toilet paper and waste get stuck. When a toilet has a weak flush, that can happen more easily. So, if your toilet keeps clogging, check the flushing function. Does it still seem strong? Or does the water going down look weaker than it used to? Mineral buildup on the rim jets, a worn flapper, or a constricted water supply line from scale can result in a weak flush that allows clogging to occur. (Although, if your toilet has always had clogging issues, it may just be a cheap model that doesn’t have much flushing power to begin with, and the best course of action is to replace it with a better model.) A local plumber can help troubleshoot these kinds of issues and repair or replace anything that’s causing a problem.

A bigger issue that could be manifested in repeated toilet clogging is related to your sewer line. A blocked sewer line can cause all sorts of issues, including clogs and backups in your toilets or sinks.
