Rodding Pipes – When Do You Need Sewer Rodding?

If you’re experiencing slow draining sinks and slow flushing toilets across your whole home or water is backing up, you may have a blocked sewer line. In this case, you will need to have an experienced plumber come out and unclog your sewer lines to get your home back in working order.

Sewer rodding is a technique that experienced plumbers use to bore out clogged sewer pipes to get water and waste flowing through them normally once again. With rodding, metal rods of varying sizes  are connected to push their way through pipes, breaking up sediment, hair and grease clogs, roots, and anything else that may be blocking them. Many times a plumbing crew will use a camera to scope the pipes to get a sense of where the clog is and how extensive the blockage is.

In some instances, rodding may not be the best technique to use due to the location of the clog or the size/shape/length/age of the pipes. In this case, a local plumber may choose to use a hydro jetting technique instead. Jetting achieves the same effect as rodding but instead of using interlocking rods it uses a high-powered stream of water (kind of like a pressure washer).

If you’re experiencing a wet soggy yard or notice sinking in your yard, this is an indication that you may have a cracked sewer line, not a clogged sewer line. This is a much more serious issue, requiring sewer line repair. Give a local emergency plumber a call to come out and assess the situation. If you do have a broken sewer line, a crew will begin work right away to get your home back to normal and avoid compromising the safety of your family.
