How Old Infrastructure in Lisle Can Affect Your Home Sewer Lines

If you’re a homeowner experiencing sewer line problems in Lisle, Chicago’s sewer system likely isn’t doing you any favors.

In some areas of the city and neighboring regions, the sewer system is prone to backups because pipes that carry wastewater from homes also carry stormwater runoff. With more paved surfaces across Chicago and the surrounding area, storms these days result in greater runoff, which can quickly fill the system. When the system reaches capacity, pressure can force sewage backward through private laterals (your home’s sewer main line) and into your home, creating unsanitary conditions and creating the need for costly cleanup. These kinds of backups can occur even if your own sewer line is clear.

Furthermore, the old public main lines and laterals were built from materials (clay, cast iron, and others) that are more prone to breakage over time than the materials being used today for new lines, which means that they are more susceptible to root infiltrations and damage from urban construction that causes ground vibrations.

Chicago’s harsh winters also pose a significant threat to city sewer lines and laterals. As the clay soil freezes and thaws it expands and shrinks significantly, which can shift and weaken pipes. Any offset or sagging that occurs can lead to backups as well as breaking.
