Under Sink Broken Pipe Repair in Chicago

If you have a broken pipe under your sink, the severity of the break will determine whether you can fix it yourself or whether you’ll need to call a local Chicago plumber to fix it.

Usually, when homeowners say that they have “a broken pipe” what they really mean is that water is leaking from the pipes under their sink. However, this can happen for reasons other than an actual break. Sometimes the joint is leaking rather than the pipe. Other times, the supply line may have a pinhole puncture from rubbing against something being stored under the sink. These kinds of repairs are going to be very different than a cracked or burst pipe.

If the cause of the leak looks to be relatively minor (like a loose or broken connection), you can likely fix it yourself with some tools and the right know-how. The first thing you’ll want to do is gather your tools and materials, so you’re prepared to work. Get a bucket, some towels, an adjustable wrench, plumber’s tape, and whatever you need to fix the problem (compression fitting, pipe repair clamp, rubber patch kit, etc.). Then, shut off the water at the shut-off valve, open the faucet, and drain the remaining water into a bucket. For a loose fitting, remove it and wrap it with plumber’s tape and then reconnect it. For a broken fitting, remove it, wrap the connection point with plumber’s tape, and then install the new one. For a pinhole leak, apply a repair clamp or rubber patch to the affected area. Then, turn the water back on and test the fix to ensure water is no longer leaking. If you still see water, turn the water off again and troubleshoot why the fix didn’t work.

If the cause of the leak is more serious, like a cracked pipe or frozen pipe that has burst, call Chicago plumbers to come out and fix the issue. These kinds of sink pipe repairs are more involved and will likely involve tools like a pipe cutter or hacksaw as well as the right size and style of pipe to complete the repair. Therefore, they’re best left to the professionals to handle.
